Fakhruddin G Ibrahim ready to become Chief Election Commissioner

Talking to a private TV channel, the former judge of the Supreme Court said that his top most priority would be to held transparent election, urging media and civil society to play their role in achieving the task.
In his view, the people of Pakistan have been undergoing pain. He, however, said that he wasn’t formally informed about his nomination. He was of the opinion that the term of parliament should be four years.
On Monday, the Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) unanimously approved Fakhruddin G Ibrahim for the top slot.
The body headed by Syed Khurshid Shah considered the nominations in detail forwarded by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan showed consent on the name of Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G Ibrahim.
Earlier, President was used to appoint CEC but under Article 213, the premier in consultation with the opposition leader is required to forward three names to the parliamentary committee for final name.
Syed Khurshid Shah, the chief whip of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) in the National Assembly, while talking to the media said that ninety per cent work pertaining to implementation of the Charter of Democracy (CoD) had been completed.
He was of the opinion that there should be no fears regarding rigging in the upcoming polls after the selection of Fakhruddin G Ibrahim.
It is vital to mention here that Fakhruddin’s name was proposed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the second largest party in the parliament. The two other names it had proposed were Justice Shakirullah Jan and Justice (Retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid.
Justice Fakhruddin is an eminent Pakistani jurist, constitutional expert, senior advocate Supreme Court, former federal law minister, former attorney general of Pakistan, former judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and former governor of Sindh.
In March 1981, he was amongst the very few judges who refused to take oath under Provincial Constitutional Order (PCO) drafted by General Ziaul Haq.
The establishment of the Citizen Police Liaison Committee in 1989 remains one of Ibrahim’s prolific achievements.
