Islamabad: (Tuesday, July 10, 2012) Contrary to the ruling alliance, who planned to pass the dual nationality bill quite easily from both the parliamentarians, the upper house of the parliament observed strong
voices against the bill.
Among those who strongly opposed the bill, there were senators from Pakistan Muslim League (N), ANP, and even the PPP.
The bill was presented in the Senate by the law minister Farooq h Naek. While protesting the bill, both PML N and ANP staged a walkout from the senate.
Earlier, with regard to another bill allowing dual national holders to hold public offices in the country, ANP Senator Haji Adeel said that Pakistan’s agreements with 16 countries regarding dual
nationality should be presented.
He also asked if someone holding Pakistani nationality had a chance of becoming the US president or even a parliamentarian in some other country.
Expressing their thoughts over the proposed bill, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan and Raza Rabbani also expressed their reservations on the bill.
Ahsan, while commenting on the move, said that while someone takes oath as American citizen, they have to renounce other nationalities. He said, “It is written in the US citizenship oath that a person can
also take up arms in defence of the country.”
Sharing somewhat similar views, senator Rabbani asked for a review of the dual nationality agreement with the US.
Denouncing the bill, MQM senator Tahir Mashadi said that he also had reservations over the bill, and that he would inform the standing committee about his reservations.
