No need to press panic button, says Darren Sammy
Thursday, July 12th, 2012 1:06:15 by Rana Nasir GhafoorWest Indies skipper Darren Sammy has said that his team don’t need to press the panic button after suffering an embarrassing 88-run loss in the third One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand at Warner Park on Wednesday.
The Caribbean Kings were 2-0 up in the five-match series, but failed to continue the good work. Batting first, the Black Caps piled up a decent total of 249 runs, courtesy of brilliant half-centuries by Rob Nicol and Nathan McCullum.
In reply, the West Indians could not do anything special with the bat. Apart from Andre Russell, no batsman could do anything special and as a result, the whole side collapsed on 161.
Sammy was not reluctant to admit that the Kiwis played some very good cricket, but made it clear that there is no need to be panic after their first loss in the series.
"I think New Zealand played really well. It was an off day for us and we have put it behind us and looking forward to getting back to our winning ways. Since we’ve been playing some good cricket, we won’t let one game dampen the spirit of the boys. We have
put it behind us and come Saturday … we will go out and play some good cricket," said Sammy.
"We were not surprised [by New Zealand’s performance]. We’re playing against an international team and we expect them to come out and perform. We’ve been winning since the series started in Florida and today they outclassed us in the field, they were much
more positive,” added the all-rounder.
The captain described that most of the players are in good form and chasing 250 should have not been a difficult task. Despite expressing disappointment over his side’s below par effort, Sammy did not take the credit away from the opposition, saying that
the New Zealanders executed their plans quite nicely.
“They (Black Caps) seemed to execute their plans better today and they were really, really good in the field. There were three run-outs and that always sets you on the back foot. The guys felt we could restrict them to a smaller total," he shared.
The two teams will meet next at Basseterre on Saturday, July 14th.
