Apple recognized it and lowered down the device’s price in two terms. Though the new MacBook Air 2012 does not bring anything revolutionary, it has an affordable price that has dropped down to $1100. It also has the third-generation Ivy Bridge Core i3 CPU from Intel, also released this year.

HP Folio 13

Released earlier this year, Folio 13 is still the best in ultrabook category for many reasons. It surely compromises on the depth of the chassis, keeping it just within the requisites of being an ultrabook. However, it has a sturdy, strong, simple and yet stylish design.

HP did not incorporate the tapered design in the Folio 13, which has been seen in MacBook Air and other ultra- and mid-size laptops. It has a simple slab-like structure and island-style keys that are backlit. It is one of the early adopters of the LED backlights in the keyboards.

The touchpad is very responsive although it does not match the performance of the Mac devices.

There are no optical drives but Ethernet, HDMI and USB 3.0 ports are standard at HP.

The only drawback in Folio 13 is the processor, it has the second-gen Sandy Bridge CPUs under the hood.

The HP Folio 13 is available for $899.

Acer Aspire S5

The third position previously belonged to Dell XPS 13, which was best alternative to MacBook Air in terms of shape. However, the Taiwanese company’s latest release of its flagship ultrabook, Aspire S5, is the best of the bunch albeit Folio 13.

It has a strong outer body with matte black finish all over. It is super-slim at 0.59 inches. Though it does not have an optical drive, all other inlets are available like Thunderbolt, Ethernet, USB 3.0, HDMI and DisplayPort ports.

The keyboard is in the same island-style structure that almost all the other ultrabooks have. The touchpad is extremely sensitive and almost matches with the Mac devices in sensitivity.

However, all this luxury comes at a premium price of $1300, at a time when Apple has reduced the price of its MacBook Air substantially.
