Match fixing threatens to destroy Pakistani football
Friday, July 13th, 2012 1:41:57 by Shahrukh SohailAccording to a source, the Pakistan Premier League has been subjected to regular match fixing and it is clearly having a negative impact on the game in the country.
Match-fixing is done under agreements between two clubs and they offer each other various items in exchange for losing a specific match.
The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, claimed that he was approached by another club to lose a game, but in the end he chose principle over materialistic gains.
“Last year, I was approached by an official of a team who were on the verge of relegation. He told me that my team should lose against his side as it would help his team to avoid relegation but I declined his offer. We were really under pressure from different
sides throughout the league but we stuck to the principles.”
“I know that this menace has been there for the last four or five years,” the official said.
He also added that the PFF should take stern notice of this and set up a new committee so that it doesn’t happen again.
“I think it’s the right time to check and arrest the fire before it could turn into ashes the whole competitions on which several million rupees are spent annually. I think the PFF should hold two separate leagues, one for departments and the other for clubs.
Unless clubs are separated, match-fixing cannot be controlled,” he added.
