The capital city of the Kingdom of Tonga, the Nuku’alofa, hosted a colourful wedding ceremony on Thursday, July 12 where the HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala tied a knot with Miss Sinaitakala Tu’imatamoana ‘i Fanakavakilangi Fakafanua.
The crown prince married the princess amid controversy of family members. The marriage was attended by scores of people, but reportedly Queen Halaevalu Mata’aho, Queen Mother, and the King’s sister, Princess Pilolevu did not show up at the ceremony. They
disapproved the wedding and remained absent intentionally.
The marriage happened just four months after the death of the groom’s childless uncle, King George Tupou V, which left the throne to princes’ father.
Following the ceremony, the couple left the Centenary Church in the back of an open-topped vehicle to the applause and clapping of hundreds of people, who lined the streets and gave a standing ovation to the newly married couple. The Kingdom of Tonga observed
a public holiday in honour of the royal wedding.
Later in the evening, a formal reception was also held near the royal palace. Around 4,000 guests attended the event. The Kingdom of Tonga will continue to enjoy the week of celebratory festivities through Sunday.
As with all Tongan royal weddings, the match was arranged between the couple who are second cousins. The belief within the country is that marriages between members of the royal family keep the bloodline pure. But many within the family now believe this
custom is outdated and genetically dangerous, some even choosing to skip the wedding.
