Writ of state dwindles as militants storm Bannu police station
Monday, July 16th, 2012 8:21:17 by Fayyaz YaseenBannu: (Monday, July 16, 2012) Taliban banned outfits Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who were dressed in burqas (veils) attacked the old city police station in Bannu here today to free their companions out of the jail.
The attack on the police station in a security hit area sparked a gun-battle near the already fragile area of North Waziristan.
While attacking the police station, the militants threw hand grenades and opened fire on the police station building, told a senior police officer Nisar Ahmed.
Sharing details of the incidents, Nisar further added, “One suicide bomber blew himself up, while the other was shot dead by police.”
The exchange of gunfire rendered three policemen severely wounded, one of which was initially reported to be dead but later on it was confirmed that he was alive but in coma.
In result of hand grenade attacks and indiscriminate firing by the attackers, the police vehicles were destroyed while the building was also partially damaged.
Getting information of the incident, the army’s quick reaction unit was called in to assist the beleaguered police staff.
A senior army officer also confirmed news about the incident while saying that “the situation is stable now.”
Initiating the operation, the security forces have held four suspected policemen and a citizen and have transferred them to undisclosed location for further investigation.
Police had earlier reported that up to five militants attacked the building, where the attack culminated in placement of curfew by the law and order agencies in the city.
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility of the incident that took place mere 240 Kilometers away from federal capital Islamabad.
