NAB’s untimely decision to reopen cases against Sharif Brothers
Monday, July 16th, 2012 2:46:07 by Faisal FarooqThe latest decision of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to reopen cases against Sharif Brothers only months before the general elections is stirring many conspiracy theories.
The key component of these theories is apparently an effort to upset the system. Chairman NAB Admiral (Retd) Fasih Bokhari had earlier said that he was keeping the cases pending until next general elections are held.
Except Imran Khan, all political circles generally welcomed the decision. Interestingly, the special committee constituted by Admiral (Retd) Bokhari managed to convince him to take a u-turn within less than seven days.
All the cases against Sharif Brothers including the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case, Assets Beyond Known Sources of Income case and the Willful Loan Default were field 20 years ago.
Despite several provocations by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the ruling PPP leadership had turned a blind eye to these cases.
Either the government was looking the way in line with the Charter of Democracy (CoD) or there wasn’t solid stuff in these cases. The resumption of cases against the PML-N leaders at this time was quite a surprise for everyone.
With one prime minister has been disqualified while the other is likely to follow suit, the government cannot afford another front. And this move came at a time when both the major parties, the PPP and the PML-N, are holding talks for interim setup.
The appointment of Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim as Chief Election Commission (CEC) was a great success even the party sitting outside parliament, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) expressed satisfaction over it.
A continual of confrontation between the judiciary and the executive doesn’t suit the system at all. If a final date is announced through consensus between the government and the opposition, things are likely to improve.
The democracy-lovers have already started nibbling at their power despite the offstage players continue to be a decisive force. Parliamentary committees for the first time are making efforts to assert themselves though with little achievements.
Without any doubt, an orderly transition of power will bring a more confident and confidently more power civilian government.
