The app lets people video chat with each other and share files like presentations, documents and spreadsheets. This is a product of joined faculties from SkyDrive and Skype, the VoIP application Microsoft bought this year.
Outlook was also shown at the presentation. The app now works faster than before and there were a number of new features assembled in it. It is now more interactive on tablets, browsing through messages by taping and scrolling through the lists. A new Quick Actions tab lets people move, delete, flag, or forward messages as well. Another feature called Peek lets the user take a look at People, Calendar and Tasks.
The new Office will not be following the traditional one-time purchase model. Rather the suite will be available on subscription basis. By integrating Skype, SkyDrive and social networking in the new version, the company is attempting to lure more and more people to enter the new sale model.
Office is still Microsoft’s gem stone in the software business and due to its omnipresence on personal and mobile computing devices; it is one of most earning software the company develops. Due to the entrance of other companies in the office application business, especially Google’s web-based office suite, the company is forced to move in a different direction.
The addition of the new features, mostly internet-based, is a clear manifestation from the Redmond-based company welcomes every new technology to keep its precious software ahead of the competition.
Office 365 will be available in three version, Office 365 Home Premium, Office 365 Small Business Premium and Office 365 ProPlus. Furthermore, it will also land in iOS environment as well, most probably in Home Premium version.
The pricing schedule of the versions will be revealed come Fall, most probably along with the release of Windows 8.
