Alexandre Vinokourov wins the Olympics Men’s Road Race gold medal

Kazakhstani cyclist Alexandre Vinokourov won the gold medal at the 250 kilometre Olympics Men’s Road Race event.

The cyclists took a total time of 5 hours, 45 minutes and 57 seconds to restrict Rigoberto Uran Uran of Team Columbia and Alexander Kristoff of Team Norway for the second and the third spots.

Rigoberto finished almost at the same time while Kristoff was 8 seconds behind the race leader and achieved the bronze medal.

Taylor Phinney (United States of America), Sergey Lagutin (Uzbekistan) and Stuart O’ Grady (Australia) occupied the fourth, the fifth and the sixth positions in the respective order.

Vinokourov was having a dry season with zero victories in his account before he headed towards the biggest event of the year, the Olympic Games.

The cyclist had enough legs to make it through the top podium spot by winning gold at the Olympics opening event.

The 38-year-old was delighted after receiving the honours and noted that it has always been his dream and he is now looking ahead towards riding the time trial event on Wednesday.

“I didn’t win any stages of the Tour, but today the dream has come true,” he noted.

“It is nice to finish off my career with a gold medal. I will still race in the time trial on Wednesday, but I will just spin”.

“I have what I have wanted. I have the gold medal and I can envision my retirement”.

“After so many crashes, returning to cycling was difficult for me. I still have a metal plate in my femur, so it was not easy”.

“My family and my children were behind me the entire time,” Alexander concluded.
