Carl Froch: I never said Amir Khan to retire!
Thursday, July 19th, 2012 11:25:50 by Imran Shaukat KhanIBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch recently locked many headlines in the country after he suggested Amir Khan to retire following his brutal fourth round stoppage against Danny Garcia last Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
After Khan’s third defeat, Froch was interviewed by Radio 5 Live, in which he was asked to share his thoughts.
Several media outlets all over the world published that Froch wants Amir to walk away from the sport.
However, the 35-year-old has now clarified that he never said Khan to retire and his quote was taken out of context.
“I did an interview on Radio Five and my quote was taken out of context on the BBC website on their news pages, “Froch told Boxing News.
“I didn’t say ‘If I was Amir I’d retire,’ I said, ‘If it was me, I’d retire.’ I’m 35 years old, I’m three times world champion, if I’d have lost like that, I would have retired.”
He said, “I don’t think Amir Khan should retire! That’s ludicrous. Why would I tell a 25-year-old to retire?”
The Bolton man, who is more commonly known as King Khan, reacted strongly when he came to know about the statement. Khan said Froch ‘should keep his opinions to himself and if he wants to retire he can’.
Nevertheless, Froch has not taken anything to his heart since he knows Khan’s reaction is not wrong.
He added, “Now Amir Khan has read a false quote and come back and said something silly. But I don’t hold that against Amir at all. He was just reacting to a misquote.”
In the end, Froch, who carries a record of winning 29 of his 31 professional fights, with 21 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, insisted that he supports Khan by all means and he is proud of him.
He remarked, “Good luck to the kid, I’m behind him every time he steps in the ring.
“He’s a British fighter and he does British boxing proud.”
Well, all said and done, let’s see how Khan reacts to Carl Froch now.
