Information Minister Kaira welcomes Nawaz Sharif’s statement on interim setup

Welcoming the statement of Nawaz Sharif over consultation with all political parties on interim setup, Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has said the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) only believes on politics of reconciliation.

Speaking to media representatives, the information minister said politics of reconciliation was policy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to take all the political parties on board.

Commending the decisions of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif to hold dialogue with all major parties, Kaira said it will help in setting up caretaker setup prior to the general elections.

He observed, “Unfortunately there is a tendency of creating conspiracy theories over all political matters. There were speculations that the political parties would not be able to reach consensus on appointment of Chief Election Commissioner, but the political parties proved wrong with the naming of Fakhruddin G Ibrahim as CEC”.

He was of the opinion that the ruling PPP always stood for the appointment of neutral election commissioner as they always suffered due to rigging in the polls. He, however, said that the appointment of Fakhruddin G Ebrahim was a very positive step for all stakeholders.

The government and opposition were engaged in dialogue but no specific discussions were being held for the interim setup up till now, he added.

In order to hold free and fair elections in the country, he said the incumbent government wants that next stage should be settled with the consultation of all the opposition parties.

Kaira noted, “It was hoped that the law minister would brief the cabinet over the issue of letter to Swiss authorities and then the government would submit its reply to the Supreme Court”.

The information minister was of the opinion that the court had issued notices to the provincial authorities to hold local government elections.

Commenting about references against Sharif brothers, Kaira stated that the courts are free and all those who are facing any charges should appear before the courts.
