President Zardari welcomes India’s decision to resume cricketing ties with Pakistan
Thursday, July 19th, 2012 9:25:45 by Faisal FarooqPresident Asif Ali Zardari has written a letter to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, welcoming the resumption of bilateral cricket ties between two neighboring countries, Pakistan and India.
According to a statement, President Zardari expressed hope to the Indian premier that the resumed cricketing ties will help to improve the bilateral relationships between New Delhi and Islamabad.
The statement said, “President Zardari has relayed optimism for the improvement of people-to-people contact and a stronger bond of trust between India and Pakistan”.
In his view, the sport ties will add to positive atmosphere that has been witnessed by the India and Pakistan after restoration of dialogues between the two countries.
He noted, “I am glad to learn that the Cricket Boards of Pakistan and India have agreed to resume cricket matches after a gap of five years. I am sanguine that cricket matches between our two countries would prove to be a formidable confidence building measure and a way forward towards encouraging people-to-people contacts. Undoubtedly, it would add to the positive atmosphere which has been witnessed by the two countries after resumption of the bilateral dialogue”.
Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari held a meeting with the Indian Prime Minister during his short-visit to India.
He visited the shrine of sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti on April 9, to pay their respects and the president and PM held a short meeting over lunch.
The two reportedly discussed matters pertaining to security, improvement of bilateral ties and sought solutions to problems affecting the countries’ bilateral relationship.
Earlier on Monday, Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) invited the Pakistan cricket team for a limited-over series between December and January. The proposed series will be the first between the two countries since the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai.
It is vital to mention here that India had also invited domestic champion Sialkot Stallions to participate in the Champions League to be held in South Africa.
