Rehman Malik submits nomination papers for Senate re-election
Friday, July 20th, 2012 3:07:27 by Faisal FarooqAdvisor to Prime Minister on Interior Affairs, Rehman Malik on Friday submitted nomination papers for the technocrat seat in the Senate, the Upper House of Parliament. He submitted his papers with the provincial election commission in Karachi.
Earlier, Malik had tendered his resignation from the Senate seat on July 10, but the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) nominated him again to fill the vacant seat.
After his resignation, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has called on members of the provincial assembly of Sindh to fill the vacant seat. The polling for the seat will be held on August 8, 2012.
The advisor shared his renunciation certificate from the UK Border Agency (UKBA), saying that he was only a Pakistani citizen now and does not hold any other citizenship. He also showed his Pakistani nation identity card to the media.
The nomination papers for the vacant post will be scrutinized on 23 and 24 July, while candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by July 30, 2012.
Rehman Malik claimed that he always followed the rulings of the Supreme Court, saying he would not comment on the documents he submitted because they were under scrutiny.
He noted, “The basic reason for my resignation was that for many days [Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief] Nawaz Sharif had been saying that dual nationality came because of me and that their party will not support the dual nationality law. So, I told him that Pakistanis living abroad who send in billions of dollars to Pakistan should not be victimized and I decided to pull out myself from this issue”.
He asked the PML-N leaders to vote in favor of the dual-nationality because it was their basic right.
In his view, those who were born in the country and migrated to other countries for livelihood or securing their children’s future should be supported to retain their dual citizenship, adding that the law will not allow all the countries but only those with which Pakistan is in agreement according to the 1951 Citizenship Certificate.

He still retains “Permanent Resident” status in UK which is stamped on his Pakistani passport. This gives him the freedom to live in UK as long as he wants. Not much different than having a British passport. The Shariff brothers have the same facility. As good as being a dual national.
