Peru’s Cristobal De Col, America’s Jeffrey Lukasik and his fellow countryperson Tim Reyes advanced through into the fourth round (Round of 32) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco after claiming top honours in their respective Round 3 (Round of 64) heats that went down at Playa Revolcadero in Acapulco, Mexico, on Thursday, July 19.

America’s Michael Powell, his compatriot Colin Moran and Chile’s Guillermo Satt successfully extended their life in the competition as well after securing runner-up positions in their respective Round 3 heats.

The surfing conditions on offer at the primary event site continued to be challenging on the latest day of the competition. The field comprising of local and foreign up-and-coming surfers had their work cut out for them as they squared-off in four-man battles in demanding two-to-three foot waves.

The opening heat of Round 3 saw De Col take on Powell, his compatriot Derek Peters and Hawaii’s Keala Naihe in a battle for survival. All four surfers had a tough time getting their hands on decent scores, but as the dust settled, a two-wave total of 10.83 points proved adequate to seal the fate of the heat in De Col’s favour, consequently carrying him through into the next round.

Powell made his way into the next round as well by securing second-place finish through a two-wave total of 9.37 points, whereas Peters and Naihe rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 7.50 and 6.36 points, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.

The second heat pitted Lukasik against his compatriot Victor Done, Chile’s Guillermo Satt and Costa Rica’s Anthony Segura. The young guns continued to have little luck with the tough surfing conditions and therefore it turned out to be yet another low-scoring affair.

As the dust settled, Lukasik stood victorious with a heat-total of 9.00 points, while Satt finished behind him in runner-up place with a heat-total of 6.37 points. Both the surfers moved into the next round, while their rivals Done and Segura got ejected from the contention for the event title after finishing with a heat-total of 5.70 and 3.77 points respectively.

The third heat saw Reyes walk away with a comfortable win despite regarding a rather modest heat-total of 10.10 points. Moran accompanied his compatriot into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 6.66 points, which proved sufficient to put him in second place.

Argentina’s Lucas Santamaria and Hawaii’s Makai McNamara finished with a heat-total of 6.23 and 6.40 points respectively, thus getting removed from the race for the event title.
