USS Makin consumes half the money and churns double the effort – Part 2
Monday, July 23rd, 2012 3:23:39 by Usman KhalidHowever, the most important efficiency of the ship is to stay in the battlefield for almost twice the time of other vessels with traditional fuel systems. Given the consumption of half the fuel of the allotted budget, the ship can stay for longer, almost twice the time of its counterparts, giving it a competitive strategic benefit.
Apart from the strategic gains, the new system also incorporates a cost effective automated system that needs almost half the number of technical staff at the Makin Island’s engineering control center. Ponce said that the ship used only 11 of the Navy’s staff at the center because most of the system was automated.
Another benefit of the new ship is the availability of fresh, drinkable water. The new system also has an anti-osmosis system that converts the salted sea water into potable thirst-quencher in volumes of up to 200,000 gallons per day.
The sea water goes through a series of filter membranes that sieve off the salts and out comes pure and distilled water. Afterwards, water is streamed through electrified salt pallets to kill all the contaminants from it. The end product is completely usable water. The salt pallets are then thrown overboard.
The huge volume of water is used for drinking, bathing and washing alike. The sailors can take long baths just like at home.
These innovations are of most importance in boosting up the efficiency of physical and human assets of the armed forces and Makin’s apparatus is a clear example that all is going the right way.
