Our careless attitude towards road safety measures
Tuesday, July 24th, 2012 3:58:36 by Faisal FarooqThe best instance of how heartless Pakistani society has become that we can look upon the face of preventable tragedy but not to be made enough efforts to avoid it.
Take the latest accident that occurred near Rawalpindi a few days ago, when a bus carrying more than 50 passengers fell into a ravine, killing nine people at the spot.
While taking a sharp turn, driver reportedly shouted that he had lost control over the steering and advised passengers to jump out of it if they could. Although drive himself sustained injuries, nine people lost their lives and many others wounded in the accident.
Although such incidents occur frequently, only few reflect on where the blame lies. Drivers are held responsible by passengers in some cases, even not the law.
However, the state departments are equally responsible, if not more, for such tragedies. The state only introduced few regulations to ensure the fitness of the vehicles and it was even less interested to enforce them.
The role of the oversight that ought to be played by the state is left to an individual, the driver or owner of the vehicle, likewise many areas of the country. Passengers that may be placed at risk must rely on good fortune.
The state while owning responsibility should formulate a strategy in terms of road safety measures. Among the measures it should take are vehicles can pass a road-worthiness test, drivers are licensed and must have knowledge of the rules and regulations, and public transport is regulation in a much more comprehensive way.
Another thing is overcrowding the regulatory department rarely pay attention towards it. In order to not compromise for public safety, these things should be brought under control.
In what appeared to be a severe negligence, the state has not enforcing the laws what it exerted in certain cities and on some highways. The situation is much different and improved in motorway and some other highways where authorities concerned given mandate to improve the situation.
The government should expand the same rules and techniques to cover the whole country if it wants to give future generations a better and civilized country.
