The Sony Vaio Z, a 2.5 pounds, matches it in the 13-inch category based on laptops we’ve seen this year. Only the 11-inch MacBook Air is lightest than the Series 9 at 2.34 pounds, but the Series 9 reigns the 13-inch category.

The overall design is all matte, from the outer body to screen to mouse track pad. The lid, which is black in colour, is extremely prone to finger smudges which look really untidy when in public or worse in a meeting.

Viewing angles are also superb, and text can be read off the screen even at maximum tilt. The screen is higher-res than many 13-inch laptops at 1,600×900 pixels. Some rare 13-inchers are full 1080p, but 1,600×900 feels like a better resolution at this size. The effective desktop area becomes larger, and icons are smaller, but not enough to be annoying.

The keyboard is the most prominent part of the device that has been improved over its predecessors. The size is not big to get out of the frame but not too small to get too cramped up. It is backlit with blue colour that its set to tone intuitively. The backlight is too subtle to be noticed. If you have ever used a backlit keyboard, then you might not notice the Series 9’s blue lights until the device is inside a completely dark room.

Stereo speakers are seated below the front edge of the laptop, and while they have crisp definition for music or movies, they’re not particularly loud. In a quiet room, it was still hard to hear some dialogue in a Netflix streaming movie. Headphones are still a better option.
