Apple under attack: A malware infiltrates iOS-based App Store and iTunes – Part 2
Wednesday, July 25th, 2012 2:05:12 by Usman KhalidSince the downloaded file is a .ipapackage, thisexecutable could be extracted using the package manager Pacifist, and then more accurately scan. Afterwards, other malware programs like Sophos that initially miss detecting the malware instantly pick it up and describe it as “Mal/CoiDung-A,” a worm written in visual basic that installs files within the Windows system directory and then modifies the Windows registry to execute the malware when the system is restarted.
This clearly shows that the file is Windows-based and will wreak more harm, or the harm, on Windows-based systems.
For the time being, the app has not been catered to by either Microsoft or Apple but the latter is expected to take action as soon as the next day. This is not the first time that Apple has missed on a malware on their most secure online application store. Earlier this year Kaspersky Lab discovered an app called “Find & Call” that itself was a data-harvesting malware package.
Apple took immediate action and swiftly removed the application from the store. It is expected that the company will do the same in the same manner this time around. For the time being, it is advised to not to download the application on iOS devices and do not manage App Store and iTunes from Windows.
Please, note that the aforementioned malware/trogon does not have the same harmful magnitude of the Flashback virus. Therefore, if detected on iOS devices, do not install any app or program. First discovered in August 2009, the malware is relatively old and has been defined properly for most antimalware utilities, so it should be detectable if installed.
