Cabinet approves MoU on new terms of engagement with United States

In what appeared to be another positive step, Federal Cabinet on Wednesday approved singing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States (US) on new terms of engagement and resumption of Ground Line of Communications (GLoC).

Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira briefing the media said the decision was taken in line with the guidelines of Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS). In his view, every agreement will be in black and white and no hidden or unwritten accord will be made with any foreign country.

The minister made it clear that the draft approved by the cabinet was discussed in all relevant forums including ministries and security forces. He also informed that the cabinet has permitted Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources to begin talks with India to explore possibility of purchase of POL products.

Kaira while commenting on Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project said, “For import of gas from Iran, we will have to lay about 1,000 KM pipeline but for import of natural gas from India, we will have to lay only 60 km pipeline and if it is feasible, it can provide instant relief to the nation”.

He said import of these products could be low-priced due to immediacy factor, adding that there was possibility of Pakistan exporting Naptha to neighboring countries.

He also stated that the ministry was allowed to begin talks with New Delhi for RLNG import but the final decision in this regard will be taken on receipts of terms, conditions and economic feasibility.

Replying to a query, the minister said general polls in the country will be held by next year and the government will take all political parties on board on interim setup. In his view, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf is taking person interests in resolving the electricity crisis in the country.

Additionally, he said the cabinet formed a committee over Balochistan situation which will submit its report within seven days.

The Minister of Defence will head the committee while Ministers for Law and Justice, Information and Broadcasting, Postal Services and Science and Technology, and Advisor to the Prime Minister on Interior will be its members.
