Hawaii’s Tanner Hendrickson took out the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco after putting on an impressive performance to get the better of Australia’s Leigh Sedley in the final that went down at Playa Revolcadero in Mexico on Sunday, July 22.

This was the first major ASP victory for the 20-year-old Haiku-based surfer and he surely made a huge impression getting to it.

“This is the best feeling in the world right now, I can’t even believe this,” Hendrickson said. “That was exhausting. It’s one thing to keep duck diving, but when the weather gets this hot you get so warn down and tired. It’s pretty crazy and I’m so happy right now I don’t know what to say.”

The surfing conditions at the primary event site had been real testing throughout the course of the competition. The up-and-coming surfing talent from around the world were in contention for top honours and put on determined performances, but despite their efforts, they were kept on the back foot by the demanding waves.

Hendrickson and Sedley were two of the event’s standout performers, exhibiting a solid form since the first round to gradually make their way towards the final. The final day of the competition found the surfers as eager to rip as ever and that is exactly what they did as they collected victories in their quarter-final and semi-final heats.

Pitted against each other in the final, Hendrickson and Sedley were apparently ready to cash in for the efforts that they had been putting in since the past few days.

As the battle got underway, the fitness of Hendrickson became apparent in no time. He took on the Nature head on and made perfect wave selections. Collecting a couple of good scores, the Hawaiian managed to reach a heat-total of 12.33 points.

Sedley, on the other hand, began to show apparent signs of tiredness during the battle for the title. For someone who had looked quite solid throughout the event, a heat-total of 5.54 in the final was enough to make it obvious that he was not feeling his usual self.
