India: 21 served with life imprisonment for playing role in Gujrat riots

Gujrat: (Monday, July 30, 2012) 21 of twenty two people have been found guilty in the 2002 Gujrat riots case and have been served with life imprisonment. The one, who has been spared from the life imprisonment, is a policeman who
has been given a one year jail for dereliction of duty.

A former BJP MLA, Prahlad Gosa, including 60 others has been acquitted due to lack of evidence against them.

Hearing the case, a local Indian court had convicted the all 22 accused of playing their role and initiating riots against Muslims in Gujrat. The riots took hundreds of life, including a family whose 11 members were brutally murdered
in the aftermath of the Godhra train carnage.

S C Srivastava, the designated special judge acquitted 61 people out of the total 83 accused in the case. Initial, former BJP MLA Prahlad Gosa, and ex-municipal president of BJP Dayabhai Patel were also involved in the case.
