Apple-Samsung Case: The US District court finalizes the 10-member jury for the hearing
Tuesday, July 31st, 2012 5:24:55 by Usman KhalidAfter Google Apple is now taking Samsung to the courts in the US for alleged infringement of intellectual property rights in smartphones. The court finalized the 10-member jury for hearing and verdict on the case.
Due to the ubiquitous nature of both Samsung and Apple products in the US market, council from both sides and the judge had a field day culling down to the final ten. It is of utmost importance that none of the jurists has a biased opinion or inclination toward one party.
The torrent of questions unleashed toward the jurists ranged from which gadget they owned and what company they worked in. The latter question was of extreme importance to the case as Apple’s Cupertino-based head quarters are a few miles away from the court, which is located in San Jose.
As it turned out, the questioning proved fruitful as some of the employees had worked at Apple and some had either Apple or Samsung device with them. These ownerships prove probable cause of biasness toward one party.
However, one person select in the group of ten was involved in a patent-related lawsuit. The final jury comprised of seven men and three women.
The presiding judge Lucy Koh also asked few rhetoric question to the jurors as if they knew any employees at either company, if they had read any books about Apple or Samsung, whether they had Apple or Samsung stock, and if they had strong feelings about the case based on what they have already heard through the media.
The decision of the case is being eyed by not only the Silicon Valley but also the technology industry on the whole. The final verdict could be a watershed moment in patent culture. On the other hand, if the decision goes in Samsung’s favour, it could be a relief to the company after an extremely long time.
Apple seeks billions of dollars in damages as Samsung allegedly copied their intellectual property in their own smartphones.
