CEC Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim vows to ensure free and fair elections

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim on Tuesday said that the electoral rolls have been finalized, vowing to ensure free and fair elections.

Briefing the media about finalization of electoral lists, Fakhruddin G Ebrahim urged the civil society to come and forward and play their role. In his view, transparent polls are mandatory for future of the country.

He said that people will have to step in to play their role if they want to change the system. He noted, “Vigilance is the price of liberty and people should gauge right now which political party would suit the needs of the country best instead of complaining later”.

He announced that electoral process will continued till the election date is announced in order to accommodate all those who become eligible to vote till announcement of the elections.

Replying a query he said, “The voting lists have been made extremely transparent. The public should be aware about the new checks and balance system initiated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and NADRA. You can find out about your voting information from your cell phone”.

The CEC further said that this initiative would extremely helpful if people would find out their information now and they could inform the relevant authorities if there was an error. “Dial 8300 on your mobile to find out your name, NIC number, your electoral area and even the number your name is on in the voting list,” he added.

He asked the people to check their names on the electoral rolls, saying that this was the only way to ensure transparent polls. He further asserted, “More than seven million people have taken advantage of the new service”.

Fakhruddin G Ebrahim confessed that they had made mistakes in the past but he made it clear that now it was not time to complain but to act to make things clear. In his view, they had done their best and they are ready to hold free and fair elections.

The only aim of ECP is to hold transparent elections because this is where future of the country lies. There will be a physically handicapped Pakistan if transparency is not maintained in the coming elections, he added.
