Judge Lucy Koh subpoenas Apple and Samsung products at court hearing
Tuesday, July 31st, 2012 5:24:48 by Usman KhalidApple and Samsung have locked horns again in the battle of patent infringement. The US District Court of San Jose, presided by Judge Lucy Koh, has readied a jury bench for the hearings and the proceedings are gaining pace. In the latest news, both Apple and Samsung have been asked to unveil some of their products before the court.
Some details of these samples have leaked their way to the public as well. The most prominent one is the new Samsung Galaxy Tab, code named “P10”. The new tablet is reported to have a bigger screen than the iPad and a Retina Display resolution. For those oblivious to it, Retina Display is Apple’s patented screen technology.
The new tablet P10 is said to have an 11.8-inch display and an astonishing resolution of 2560 x 1600, highest among all Android tablets. The iPad has a 9.6-inch display with 2048 x 1536 resolution and pixel density of 264 ppi whereas, the new P10 is reported to have a 256 ppi density. The new device is also expected to have 4G LTE connectivity.
Samsung is not only Apple competitor in the smartphone, tablet and other computing device markets, but ironic as it may sound, the Korean company is also Apple’s vendor for hardware components of most iOS devices, such as displays.
The Cupertino-giants finished their contract with Sharp on displays for the iPad this year, joining hands with Samsung for the Retina Display panels. Samsung also makes other displays and multi-media components for the likes of Apple.
More devices were subpoenaed by Judge Koh including Windows Phone 8-based smartphones, code named Odyssey and Marco, and dozens of early prototypes and sketches of Apple’s iPad and iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been halted from sales in the US because of infringement pleas from Apple. Judge Koh banned the sales of the tablet in June as Apple said the key design patents that cover its iPad also applies to Tab 10.1. However, the Korean manufacturers have repeatedly claimed the design to be generic.
