Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan has decided to call it a day on his 2012 season and will also miss the UCI Road World Championships.
The cyclist underwent a surgery earlier this year and it is believed that he has not fully recovered to ride in the coming events for the remaining part of the season.
The 31-year-old marked his professional debut with Team Mapei-Quick Step in 2001 and spent a period of two years with the side.
He stayed with Team Fassa Bortolo through 2003-05 seasons before signing a five-year deal with Team CSC in 2006.
The cyclist joined the Luxembourg side, Team Leopard Trek in 2011 and was elected as a permanent member to represent Team RadioShack-Nissan in 2012.
The Swiss will represent Team RadioShack-Nissan for the season ahead as his Manager, Armin Meier told Tagesanzeiger.ch, “One must say, he has a very good contract”.
He has only managed to secure four victories in the current season, which is way below his standards and Armin believed that the main reason behind Fabian’s dipping performance is his fitness.
“He lost the Olympic time trial in his head, not because of the physical problems from the crash,” Meier said. “It was just all too much for him”.
Fabian won the National Time Trial Championships and finished first at the Strade Bianche 2012 along with the prologue victory at the Tour de France 2012.
He occupied the Individual Time Trial stage 7 of the Tirreno-Adriatico and finished second during the Milan-San Remo 2012. Fabian crashed in the final 15 kilometres at the Olympics road race which was the main reason behind his 103rd position at the race.
The cyclist could not really perform to his capabilities at the Olympics time trial mainly because of the crash and achieved the seventh spot.
” Today and when you’re competing in the Olympics, it would have been too easy to say I’d go home and watch from home,” he noted after the Olympics time trial event.
“I prepared so much for these days and most of the last few hours I’d recovered well and I was in good hands, but to win and to win medals you need to have better days”.
It will be interesting to see, if Cancellara manages to recover from the injury and regain his strength in the season ahead.
