Disappointment prevails as Kofi Annan quits Syria peace envoy
Friday, August 3rd, 2012 1:16:49 by Fayyaz YaseenUnited Nations: (Friday, August 03, 2012) Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the Security Council has decided to quit as UN-Arab League envoy for Syria after battling and failing to persuade President Bashar al-Asad to
accept a peace plan, said the UN on Thursday.
Announcing the decision, UN leader Ban Ki-moon said this with deep regret that Annan had tendered his resignation, as the Syrian civil war spiraled further out of control.
While seeking a solution for the ongoing onslaughts on Syrian citizens in Syria, the UN and the Arab League named Annan, a Nobel Peace prize winning, as its envoy on the Syria conflict on February 23.
Initially, Asad had agreed to a six point peace plan with Annan, but he never seemed serious to carry it out.
In his statement, Ban said, “I wish to express my deepest gratitude to Mr Annan for the determined and courageous efforts he has made as the Joint Special Envoy for Syria.”
He further added, “Kofi Annan deserves our profound admiration for the selfless way in which he has put his formidable skills and prestige to this most difficult and potentially thankless of assignments.”
The statement further said that Anan has said that he would not renew his mandate when it expires on August 31. Ban further said that he was in discussions with the Arab League on naming a successor.
