Sharp announces iPhone 5 LCDs will be ready to ship in August

Sharp has officially announced that it is manufacturing LCD displays for Apple’s newest edition of its flagship smartphone iPhone, widely referred to as iPhone 5. The company further said that it will start shipping the screens in August.

According to the press, Sharp made the announcement in a press briefing, presided by President Takashi Okuda. When questioned on the size of the screen, the president was of few words.

Sharp might not want to spill the beans on the screen details but various rumours suggest that the new screen is 4-inch in size, bigger than the current 3.5-inch that has been coming with the iPhone since its inauguration in 2007.

Reuters, the world’s leading news wire, has recently cited a source that suggests that the new screen is indeed 4-inch large. However, it is not wider than the last iteration. Apple has made it taller, giving it a 16:9 ratio. Moreover, Apple is also working on iOS 6 to include the fifth row of icons above the dock on iPhone’s home screen as the size has changed.

There are also rumours that Apple might be using Sharp’s new IGZA technology. The Japanese electronic-giants announced the new technology in February and also slated Apple to be one of the first beneficiaries of the tech.

The new IGZA tech makes use of a certain phenomenon that lowers down the energy consumption and increases the brightness of screen. The new tech also stretches the viewing angles.

It has also been rumoured that Apple might be using the In-cell technology that merges in both the touch sensors and LCD in one layer. Before such screens, the touch senor screen was fused with the LCD, making component expensive to buy and repair. The new technology shaves off the expenses as much as half.

With the official announcement from Sharp, it can safely be said that the 2012 launch of the new iPhone 5 is inevitable. Some sources have suggested that the company might launch the phone on September 12 and release nine days later.
