The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, bowed out to the third seed, Andy Murray, in the final showdown at the London Olympics 2012, a major sports event held after every four years. As a result, the Swiss ace captured a silver medal. On the other
hand, second seeded Novak Djokovic displayed dismal performances in the semi-final and in his battle for bronze, ultimately failing to grab a single medal.
The Swiss Maestro displayed top notch skills throughout Games of XXX Olympiad but suffered a 2-6, 1-6, 4-6 loss at the hands of the British top in one hour and 56 minutes on Centre Court in Wimbledon. Despite his loss, Federer was happy to shelf his first
singles medal at Olympics in his fourth appearance.
Federer was quoted in a courtside interview after losing the final match:
“I think this is as good as I could do during these championships. Andy was much better than I was today in many aspects of the game. For me, it’s been a great month. I won Wimbledon, became World No. 1 again, and I got silver. Don’t feel too bad for me.
I am very, very proud honestly to have won a silver. I felt like I won my silver, I didn’t lose it. So I feel very, very happy.”
Both stars last fought each other at Wimbledon a month ago where Federer bounced back to lift his 17th Grand Slam title. The Swiss reflected about Murray’s comeback:
“He’s an amazing player already. I thought he played a very, very good Wimbledon Championship.
The 30-year-old grasped gold medal in the doubles event at the Beijing Olympics four years ago. However, this silver medal is his first in singles event in his four Olympics appearances.
The former world number one, Novak Djokovic on the other hand failed to grab a single medal. After exiting to Andy Murray in semi-finals, the Serb crashed out to Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro in gruelling straight set in the battle for bronze medal.
