Duncan Fletcher impressed with Manoj Tiwary
Monday, August 6th, 2012 9:40:20 by Rana Nasir GhafoorIndian head coach Duncan Fletcher is impressed with Manoj Tiwary’s superb knock in the final One Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka. He described that the young lad has established himself as a very strong contender for a place in the one-day squad.
"His temperament has shown that he is up to the big occasion, when pressure is on he has produced the results. He is a serious contender for a regular place in the one day side," said Fletcher, who took over as India’s coach after Gary Kirsten’s departure
in 2011.
The Men in Blue got off to a great start, as Gautam Gambhir continued his good form and scored a blistering innings of 88 runs. The tourists lost a few wickets in quick succession, but Manoj Tiwary did well to set a solid foundation for the late-order batsmen.
He scored 65 runs including six lovely boundaries, taking his side to 294 runs in 50 0vers.
In reply, the islanders looked helpless in front of Irfan Pathan, who grabbed five wickets for only 61 runs. As a result, India won the game by 20 runs, securing the series 4-1.
Fletcher was delighted to see his side on the winning ways. Taking about his team’s series win after being crushed by Australia and England last summer, the coach said:
"It was a very good win after a long break. We were obviously gonna arrive here little bit unfit, we worked on fitness regime and played some good cricket. There is room for improvement. But I think we will be pretty pleased with the 4-1 result against Sri
Lanka in Sri Lanka."
He did not forget to heap praise on Virat Kohli, who bagged the ‘Player of the Series’ award for his outstanding work throughout the competition. He was quite pleased to his side maintaining the standards all the way through, and not letting the opposition
gain momentum at any moment.
"He is very professional on and off the field. He has got the results that he deserves. We got ourselves in to the situation of making sure that we maintain our concentration levels," the India coach added.
