First Democratic Transition in Pakistan to be Crucial
Tuesday, August 7th, 2012 4:02:14 by Syed Hassan BokhariFor the first time in Pakistan’s short, but intense and crucial history, the nation will be witnessing the first ever transition between actual democratic governments.
Many might think that the 2008 general elections was the transition but that was definitely not as the previous government was under a martial law dictator who came into power by ousting a Prime Minister in 1999 and no matter how much the judiciary may have tried to allow the dictator to stay back in 2002, treason will always be treason.
Pakistan, according to many analysts including top level office bearers of the U.S. Government and armed forces, was on the brink of collapse during the 2007-2008 period and should have been off the world map in the next few years, but amazingly, the state that was destined to live, continues to tell its heroic story of survival to the flabbergasted world around it.
Reading about Pakistan in the international magazines and watching channels like CNN and even local Pakistani television stations, people would think that at any moment now, Jinnah’s nation will be torn apart into pieces, but the resilient nation of South Asia continues to shock and awe.
Some might call it a terrorist nation, a failed state, a third world country and even home to the world’s most illiterate people, but unless you have actually lived in Pakistan you cannot tell that it is really the best place in the world.
The upcoming elections are, to the surprise of many, scheduled to take place after the incumbent government defies all odds and completes its tenure. With potential candidates from various political parties gearing up to set the stages in their constituencies, people are also hopeful of a new and fresh beginning.
Why the next elections are crucial? Because the people of Pakistan, no matter how united they may claim to be, have trouble accepting something that they were not expecting.
One thing is for sure and that is the elections in this country have never been predictable. People must be allowed to use their vote in any which way they want. Candidates must be allowed to fully portray themselves as the best fit for the position without reiterating to violence and hate speech.
Hopefully, with the grace of God which has kept this nation running at full pace and disappointing those that expected its downfall on a number of occasions, Pakistan will see another democratic government which, if allowed to work without interference, will live up to the hopes and dreams of the people.
