Thursday, August 9th, 2012 4:02:30 by Farasat AliEastman Kodak, the company that brought photography to ordinary mortals, now makes part of its technology patents for sale. And it does so with the intent to raise about $ 2,600 million, a vital cash injection.
However, the first offerings indicate that the Spanish company that manages the Antonio Perez would fall short.
Kodak were filed for bankruptcy in late January. They tried to sell a package with a thousand patents for digital photography as a lifeguard before taking the step. Now, they are going to sell their
patents to the highest bidder.
And that is a major draw for Apple and Google, the two great rivals in mobile arena altogether.
The auction was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, according to media ahead of the technology sector. The sale of these patents is a key step in the restructuring process and that money will be used to pay the debts to the
creditors.
Apple and Google would be in front of two groups of investors. The aggressiveness with which confronts the process will be crucial for Perez to profitable operation. His plan is to refocus the business
to imaging services.
Apple returns to make pineapple with Microsoft, as it did in the bid for Nortel Networks patents, for which they paid 4,500 million to cancel the offer from Google. The asking price then was 900 million, which
could indicate that they can go beyond expectations. Soon after, the portal AOL sold Microsoft a package of patents 1,000 million.
While Apple plays with the advantage of having more than 100,000 million in cash to spend, in the case of Google has the support of Samsung, HTC and LG, the leading manufacturer of mobile devices using the Android operating
system.
The original patents are very valuable for new players in the technology sector, for them to develop their products without limitations and avoid long and costly legal battles. The way to acquire them is usually
acquire the company that controls those rights. This is what Google did with the manufacturer of Motorola phones.
