UCI has requested the Olympics authorities for additional medals for the 2016 version of the race.
Cycling is currently allocated a total number of 10 gold medals for the track cycling with an equal allocation of five for women and five for men.
The medals are further split to have two endurance and three sprint medals for both the categories.
UCI President Pat McQuaid explained to Cyclingnews that the sport definitely needs more nominations at the Olympics event.
He cited that it will be encouraging for the athletes and International Olympics Committee is aware of the fact that the audience for the cycling events is increasing continuously.
Massive crowds have been observed during the cycling events at the ongoing version of the 2012 Olympic Games as noted by Pat.
“The four events that are there will stay there. The fifth event, the omnium, well that we’ll evaluate how it’s working and maybe tweak it to improve it”
“But in principle from what I understand from the technical team, it’s a good event and it’s worked very well”.
“At moment we have three sprint events and two endurance events”.
“I would like three sprint events and three endurance events and that way we keep the attraction for road riders to be involved in track racing, which is important”.
Cycling collectively had 18 gold medals during the 2012 London Olympics and Great Britain managed to grab a maximum number of 8 medals in its bag.
Germany secured 4 silver and 1 bronze medals with France succeeded in grabbing 3 silver medals along with a gold medal each.
Australia, United State, Colombia, Netherlands, Kazakhstan, Denmark, Latvia and Czech Republic all grabbed a gold medal each at the event.
British cyclists managed to grab two silver and two bronze medals to make the total count to 12 medals to its account.
Bradley Wiggins succeeded at the men’s time trial event to bag the gold medal with Chris Hoy becoming the first British cyclist to secure a maximum number of six gold medals to his credit.
Victoria Pendleton claimed the silver medal at the women’s individual sprint and gold at the women’s Keirin.
Australian cyclist Anna Meares succeeded at the women’s individual sprint whereas Kristina Vogel of Germany bagged victory at the women’s team sprint.
Mariana Pajon became the only Colombian athlete to achieve the top medal at the Olympics event after her tremendous performance during the BMC tournament.
It will be interesting to see, if IOC grants UCI with additional medals for the coming editions of the Olympic Games.
