Amazon.com, the largest book sellers in the world, were inspired by the great Amazon river and the surrounding forest in Brazil. And Jeff Bezos took the company to dazzling heights were indeed it has imitated the Amazons with the hoarding e-books and Kindle Fires.
Now the company plans to enter the very country were the great Amazon lies, Brazil. The country more commonly known for its growing economy has become a major interest to Amazon. Being a part of the four fastest growing countries in terms of economy, Brazil remains the last one to formally welcome Amazon.com.
But Amazon’s entry into Brazil faces a few twists and turns.
Local news reports hinted earlier this year that Amazon was hunting for warehouse space in Brazil’s largest cities and that by Q3, the e-commerce king planned to start selling printed books and CDs along with Portuguese-language e-books in the country.
Now, JPMorgan and other analysts say Amazon’s foray in Brazil so far has been less aggressive than expected. The chief beneficiary will be Latin America’s dominant e-commerce player, MercadoLibre.
“We see this as positive for (MercadoLibre), on a lower competitive threat than expected,” JPMorgan analyst Andre Baggio told IBD via email.
While Brazil is one of the BRIC countries of fast-rising, developing countries — along with Russia, India and China — it is just that: developing.
