Pakistan expresses concerns over deteriorating situation of Syria

Foreign Office spokesman Moazzam Ahmad Khan has said that Islamabad was concerned over the deteriorating situation in Syria and over the plight of Muslim community in Burma (Myanmar).

While speaking to the media during a weekly briefing, he said that President Asif Ali Zardari had sent a letter to his Myanmar’s counterpart of the excesses with Rohingya Muslims.

When he was asked about Pakistan’s stance over the Syrian crisis, he said they were neither with Saudi Arabia nor with Syria, adding that they have they own policy over the issue.

He asserted, “There should be no foreign intervention and the issue should be resolved through talks”.

He said that Islamabad and Washington were deliberating on proposals to further enhance bilateral relations.

The spokesperson said that the recent trip was productive and both the allies were looking forward to take measures to improve bilateral ties in different walks of life.

He noted, “Pakistan and United States are discussing several proposals to bring their relationship back on track but no specific details can be shared at this stage”.

The spokesperson rejected the impression that the US released 280 million dollars for power sector development in the country in return for Islamabad’s committeemen not to pursue Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.

He clarified, “The US has released the amount for Mangla Dam and Kurram Tangi Dam under Kerry-Lugar Bill and this has nothing to do with Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project”.

Replying to a query, the spokesperson said that Taliban leader Mullah Brother was in Pakistan’s custody and it was not going to hand it over to any other country.

Commenting about visit of the Chairman Afghan High Peace Council Salahuddin Rabbani, he said the officials in Islamabad and Kabul were framing dates that are reciprocally suitable for the two countries.

Moazzam Khan was of the opinion that Pakistan attaches importance to the visit and that is why Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf had extended the invitation for the purpose during his recent visit to Afghanistan.
