Altaf Hussain urges to end govt-judiciary confrontation

Urging both the government and the judiciary to end their conflict, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain said that the two should reconcile for the sake of the country.

Addressing a large public gathering, Altaf Hussain said both the institutions should accept each other and turn the rift into friendly relation.

He called upon all stakeholders including political and religious parties, the armed forces, traders and the judiciary to sit to gather and formulate an agenda to save the country from demolition.

He highlighted issues of gas and power shortages and unemployment, saying traders were wrapping up their businesses and moving abroad. Those who were here were applying for armed licences and hiring guards for their protection, he added.

Decrying national representations of the past, Altaf Hussain noted, “Pakistan’s history is hidden from its people. We are told that we won the 1965 war, but in reality we lost”.

He complained that traders were left on the mercy of extortionists in the provincial metropolis even in the presence of the government.

He added, “The country has no national language, and even if it does, it is not freely used, citing examples of proceedings in the presidency and important places which are not conducted in Urdu”.

The MQM chief also criticized family dynasties in politics, saying only Altaf Hussain and his nephews have never contested elections.

He questioned, “Is it MQM’s fault that weapons (from other parts of the country) come into Karachi after passing through thousands of security checkpoints”.

He said that people have forgotten Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s August 11 speech, and Hindus are being forced to leave the country.

Addressing nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan who was also present on the occasion, he said, “How can you criticise us for not protecting the city while we are in the government. You made the atom bomb but you were not able to protect yourself from allegations and arrests”.

The leader urged the government to work with all parties to control the law and order situation in Karachi.

Altaf Hussain is desperately trying to do some favour to Zardari for his own sinister motives. If he is sincere to the country, which he always claims then he should better advise the Government to obey the court orders.

The anticipation that August 8 would produce some dramatic unfolding in the turf war between the judiciary and the executive proved not be misplaced. However, in some circles the hope persists that even now some way out of the deadlock may be found. Whether this can happen before August 27, when Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has been asked to appear before the court to explain his position on writing the letter, remains an open and fraught question. Going by the words of Justice Asif Saeed Khosa that he reiterated in the court yesterday on finding some workable solution, it is about time for the judiciary as well to show restraint. It is for the SC to consider if it is not moving beyond its ambit, triggering a conflict with other state institutions. The separation of powers scheme of the constitution enjoins all state institutions to work together while remaining within their purview, not against each other.
