Apple empties stocks with discounted iPhone 4S to make room for the new iPhone version 2012
Monday, August 13th, 2012 5:07:15 by Usman KhalidApple is clearing out its inventory of current iPhones ahead of the expected September launch of its next-generation handset.
Retailers and wireless carriers are offering discounts on the iPhone 4S to empty their shelves to make room for Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone, informally called the iPhone 5. Apple has not disclosed plans for its next iPhone, but media reports say the Cupertino-based firm will announce the device at an event next month, possibly on September 12.
Sprint Nextel started the price cuts on August 6 by knocking $50 off of every model iPhone 4S. Sprint is selling the iPhone 4S starting at $149.99 for the base model, which used to cost $199.99.
Apple has given its Apple Stores the go-ahead to match discounts on the iPhone 4S from carriers and major retailers such as Best Buy and Target, a salesperson at Apple’s Tysons Corner, Va., store told IBD Friday.
“The fact that Apple is now discounting the handset bodes well for the rumored September release date for the next generation iPhone,” Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley said. “Apple rarely discounts newer items, except just ahead of product refreshes.”
The new iPhone is expected to break sales records as it purportedly brings some new features to the handset such as a big screen with 16:9 ratio, 4G LTE and not so sales-oriented upgrade to the docking jack.
