In 1989, Dream Theater released their first album, When Dream and Day Unite. However, it was not received as they were anticipating. Mechanic Record broke majority of the financial promises made with the band due to the unsuccessful album.
Dominici was fired in the early months of 1990, as the band started to feel the limitations of his vocals. The band started their search for a new front-man following the departure of Dominici, and auditioned over 200 people.
Steve Stone was introduced as the American progressive metal band’s new singer in the mid 1990, but was fired after only performing with them at one show.
Until 1991, Dream Theater remained focused to hire a new vocalist while writing new material. In January 1991, Kevin James LaBrie, the front-man of glam metal band Winter Rose, flew all the way from Canada to New York for an audition. He jammed on three songs, and the band immediately hired him as the new lead vocalist.
Derek Shulman and Atco Record (Now EastWest), a division of Elektra Records, signed the band to a seven-album contract.
The first album Dream Theater recorded under new record deal was Images and Words (1992). For promotion, the record label released a CD single and video clip for the song ‘Another Day’. However, it failed to make significant commercial impact. The second song ‘Pull me Under’, however, was a huge commercial success for the band.
The success of ‘Pull me Under’ along with relentless touring throughout the U.S. and Japan made ‘Images and Words’ to achieve gold record certification in America and platinum in Japan.
