Wednesday, August 15th, 2012 3:25:51 by Muhammad Qasim HassanNew Zealand’s Matt-Lewis Hewitt and America’s Derek Peters advanced to the third round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats that went down at the Grande Pelage in Lacanau, France, on Tuesday, August 14.
Brazil’s Ricardo Ferreira finished behind Hewitt in runner-up place during the first heat to accompany the latter into the next round. France’s Tom Cloarec and Edouard Delpero got eliminated after failing to find a place in top-two.
The second heat saw Portugal’s Miguel Blanco secure his place in the third round of the competition after clinching runner-up position behind Peters during the second heat. Portugal’s Filipe Jervis and his fellow countryperson Pedro Correia were sent packing after finishing in bottom-two positions.
The opening day of the competition promised to feature plenty of thrilling surfing action as three-to-four foot waves breaking at the primary event site seemed promising enough to tempt the surfers into putting their exquisite skills on display.
The opening heat of Round 2 pitted Hewitt against Ferreira, Cloarec and Delpero in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot. The Kiwi surfer got off to an energetic start and kept building momentum before eventually getting hold of a 6.57 and 9.00-point ride in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 15.57 points. The score held up until the end to earn him victory.
Ferreira got off to an impressive start as well, scoring a 7.83 off his first business wave, but only managed to add an additional 5.43 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 13.26 points.
Cloarec and Delpero failed to deliver any happiness to the local crowd as they both succumbed to the foreigners after finishing with a heat-total of 12.87 and 10.20 points respectively.
The second heat saw Peters get the better of Blanco, Jervis and Correia to advance into the next round. He registered a 6.50-point ride early in the heat and later backed it up with a 5.93-point wave to finish with a decisive heat-total of 12.43 points.
Blanco collected a couple of waves in the five-point range to get to a heat-total of 10.36 points, which proved sufficient to take him through into the next round.
Jervis finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.03 points, while Correia had to settle for the last position after registering a heat-total of merely 8.53 points.
