In May 1995, Dream Theater entered BearTracks Studios in New York to rewrite and record ‘A Change of Season’ with Sherinian contributing significantly to the final product.
The band released the self-titled ‘A Change of Seasons’ EP along with a collection of cover songs recorded live in a show at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London earlier in 1995.
Several changes at EastWest Records left the label without the band’s main contact, and the new team at the record label company forced the band to produce an album that was more feasible and commercial.
In 1997, the American band entered the studio to record new material for their fourth studio album. Desmond Child was assigned to work with John Petrucci on polishing the new material, and had a great impact on the record, with a shift towards compositions that were not as complex as previous ones.
‘Falling into Infinity’ was released in September 1997, which received a mix reception from fans and critics. The album was a disappointment both critically and commercially.
The band yet again pursued Jordan Rudess to become their full time keyboardist, and in 1999, he joined the American progressive metal band, replacing Sherinian.
Dream Theater entered BearTrack Studio once again to write and record their fifth studio album. Mike Portnoy gave an ultimatum to the record label to give the band complete freedom over their sound.
The follow-up to ‘Metropolis Part 1’, which was written during the ‘Falling into Infinity’ recording sessions, was taken off the shelf for reworking. The band decided to expand the 20-minute song into a complete conceptual album, with the story revolving around themes such as murder, betrayal and reincarnation.
