Olympic Champion, Andy Murray, failed to defend his title after crashing out to the French lucky loser, Jeremy Chardy, in brutal straight sets at the Western and Southern Open 2012 on Thursday. He suffered a 4-6, 4-6 loss at the hands of the world number
38 in the third round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Ohio, United States.
The British number one struck 10 aces and capitalised on two out of seven break opportunities. However, he was broken four times, eventually exiting from the Lindner Family Tennis Center with disappointment.
"Sometimes a few games can change matches," explained the disappointed Scot after losing the match. "I had break points in the first set. If I had maybe gone up there, maybe I would have started to play better. But when I went behind, he started serving
better and he was going for his shots."
Looking ahead to the upcoming US Open, Murray stated, "It doesn’t normally have that much bearing [before Grand Slams]. But obviously I would have liked to have done a bit better this week."
Chardy on the other end progressed into the final eight where the sixth seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, awaits. The Argentinean number one battled past Serbia’s Victor Troicki in three sets to set up this battle.
The second seed, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, also stole the show later that day. He notched up a 6-0 retirement victory over Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko.
The Serbian top stated in a courtside interview after the match:
"His first serves didn’t go over 90 miles per hour, so something obviously was wrong with his shoulder. It’s unfortunate. It was a night session match and many people came to watch. Obviously I was also expecting a good and interesting and tough match. It’s
the way it is. Hopefully he recovers for the US Open."
He will next face the 12th seed, Marin Cilic from Croatia.
