Blast kills one, injured 19 in Karachi
Friday, August 17th, 2012 4:25:27 by Faisal FarooqAt least one person was killed and nineteen others sustained injuries in an explosion that occurred near the entrance of Safari Park, Karachi.
The blast occurred when a bus carrying passengers to participate Youm-e-Quds rally on MA Jinnah Road was passing by the area. However, there is no confirmation on the nature of the blast as yet.
The DIG East while speaking to the media said the explosion was caused due to a CNG cylinder explosion.
However, Commissioner Karachi Roshan Ali Sheikh said the blast was a result of a planted device.
According to the eye witness ball bearings had pierced through the arms, legs and chests of the passengers.
According to the media, the passengers were students of Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) who were headed to the rally. More than 20 people were on board. The bus was partially destroyed as a result of the blast.
Apart from the buss, seven vehicles and nearby buildings were damaged in the explosion.
Law enforcement agencies have arrived and are conducting investigations. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) has not arrived as yet.
All of the injured have been shifted to Jinnah hospital where doctors have declared that most of them are in serious condition.
Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has sought a report from the Inspector General (IG) of Police.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Javed Maher said that an additional contingent of police had been deployed at the blast site.
Youm-e-Quds is being observed every year on the last Friday of Ramazan.
