Supreme Court directs government to pay Lady Health Worker by midnight

In order to lessen the plight of already hapless segment of society, the Supreme Court has issued directives to the government to deliver the salaries of the Lady Health Workers (LHW) to their residences by Friday midnight.

A three-member bench of the highest court of the country with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the chair resumed the hearing of the case pertaining to non-payment of salaries to the LHW.

The deputy attorney general during the course of hearing informed the court that the amount of salaries for third quarter of the year had been deposited in the bank accounts of the provincial governments.

On this, Chief Justice Chaudhry said that the government had not done anyone’s favor rather fulfilling its responsibilities by depositing the salaries of the lady health workers.

Moreover, the chief justice issued directives to the deputy attorney general that salaries of LHW should be delivered to their residences by midnight.

Upon which, the deputy attorney general said that it might be difficult to deposit the salaries in the concerned accounts as officials had been working until late on Thursday.

Chief Justice Chaudhry, upon which, directed the attorney general to read Article 9 of the Constitution to the concerned officials.

Moreover, during the hearing, petitioner Bushra Arain requested the court to send to jail those responsible for the non-payment of the health workers’ salaries.

Lady Health Workers have been protesting against non-payment of salaries and against the government’s failure to regularize their services for months across the country and seem to have reached their limits.

They had demanded that 1, 30,400 members of the LHW program be regularized and their salaries paid.
