The Supreme Court while expressing dissatisfaction rejected the interim report presented by Director Legal of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL) scandal case.

A three-judge bench of the apex court with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the chair resumed hearing of the NICL scam.

Over the directives of the apex court, Director Legal FIA Azam Khan submitted another interim report which was rejected by the bench.

The bench asked him that why recoveries were not being made in Lahore and who was the in-charge of FIA there. Replying to this, Azam Khan said that Waqar Haider was the director FIA in Lahore.

During the course of proceedings, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry inquired who stopped Zafar Qureshi from appearing before court on its directives if Waqaer Haider was heading the station in Lahore.

Expressing annoyance over performance of the investigative agency, the chief justice warned the officials to become serious about the probe. He remarked, “It seems as if influential people are being protected”.

Earlier on Thursday, the bench had directed the Director Legal FIA to submit a written reply about the recoveries.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry in his remarks had said it was also the duty of the court to recover the embezzled money, adding that Waqar Haider would do nothing and it was obvious why he would not do anything.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja said some influential persons were hiding the responsible persons.

Upon which, Azam Khan informed the bench t that Mohsin Habib Warraich had been blacklisted and would be arrested.

In the meantime, Secretary Trade said that recovery of Rs1 billion had been made in Karachi to which the chief justice said it was an old story.

The SC on Wednesday expressed anger over bouncing of recovery cheques in the NICL scandal case, ordering arrest of those responsible for appointment of former head of NICL, Ayaz Niazi.

Director Legal FIA told the court they got a cheque for Rs420 million, which bounced. He said a case had been registered in this regard.
