Burma gives permission to two newspapers after protests!
Tuesday, August 21st, 2012 2:09:07 by Imran Shaukat KhanBurma’s government lifted suspension on two weekly journals within two weeks, there editors confirmed the news saying that the suspension was lifted after rare protests by journalists in two cities to demand more press freedom.
Editors of the Burmese-language Voice Weekly and The Envoy told Reuters that Burma’s government has given them the permission to resume publishing by Aug 18. They said government didn’t tell them why the suspension has been lifted.
The publications of journals were halted indefinitely late last month, which created an outcry among the journalists. However, now it has been resumed since a lot of protests were being held in the country by the journalists.
“The reason for lifting the suspension, I think, would be because of the rallies by the journalists,” said an editor of another journal, who asked not to be named.
The quasi-civilian government has shown certainly showed a great jester but still there are many journalists in the country are not allowed to publish news freely. They are working under the restrictions that have been set the government.
“It’s as if the government is also participating in this commemoration,” Ko Ko Gyi said in a telephone interview from Mandalay, where the main rally was being held. “I feel like this is a step toward reform.”
Ko Ko Gyi, a leader of the 1988 uprising who spent many years in prison, also shared thoughts with the media over the issue, which is locking headlines all over the world.
“The president always talks about national reconciliation,” the spokesman said. “This action can help build better mutual understanding.”
“The ‘88 uprising was the symbol of the people’s cooperation,” Ko Ko Gyi said. “It makes us remember our friends who are still in prison and those who live abroad. It also reminds me of our hard times.”
Well, it is certainly a great step taken by the government. Let’s hope it works and the violence being done against the innocent Muslim community stops.
