We are moving towards an impatience society
Tuesday, August 21st, 2012 5:00:52 by Faisal FarooqIn line with the growing culture of intolerance and taking law into hands to deal with alleged dacoits and blasphemers, a mob comprising hundreds attacked a police station in Bahawalpur to kill a mentally-ill person for allegedly committing blasphemy.
The emotionally-charged mob set the police station on fire, started beating the person and reportedly burnt him to death for allegedly burning pages of the Holy Quran.
In what appeared to be a shock, the accused man had been described as an insane. After the news spread in the area, police arrested him and stared investigation under the law.
Regrettably, a tendency has developed in the country where everyone wants to decide issues himself/herself considering that the concerned institutions were incompetent to deliver justice.
In the recent past, there have been several incidents in different parts of the country where people caught hold of thieves or alleged militants, tortured them to death before arrival of law enforcement agencies.
In the latest case, the furious mob set the police station on fire which also burnt four vehicles and some adjacent buildings. Reportedly, some police personnel also received injuries at the hands of enraged mob.
In such cases, the size of these groups makes it difficult to hold anyone responsible. For instance, who will be held responsible in the Bahawalpur case when 2000 people have been booked and no one named?
From rioters destroying public property to protest energy shortage, to the Sialkot lynching case, to the blasphemy incidents, all the examples indicate intolerance and lack of compassion, combined with lack of faith in the state and injustice system, has turned the country into a shockingly brutal society.
I fear that there will be chaos all over the country if this trend is allowed to go on unchecked.
More responsibility lies in such cases with religious political parties, scholars and media to educate the masses and in no way approve this type of inhuman acts.
Although the profane acts hurt the sentiments of people, instant justice of likewise cannot be allowed in any case.
If anyone commits a blasphemous act, the matter should be brought to the notice of the concerned authorities and let them deal with him according to the law of the land.
