Sony brings its Vaio brand to revive the dying 11-inch laptop category, the new Vaio E available at $480 – Part 1

Sony has taken a vital step in reviving the 11-inch laptop segment with its new Vaio E. The new 11-inch laptop has also been made available to the users on an affordable $480 price tag. This might help in the cause of keeping the small laptop category alive.

A few years back the 10-inch netbook hype landed on rocks with a huge thud. There are no netbooks available these days. The breed is extinct. On the other hand, the 11-inch category has seen a similar scenario after a series of unfortunate events to its fate.

One of them is the device’s shape. When the world is moving toward thin laptops, 11-inch still have a depth of a sea. The small structure is less competitive than a tablet in many regards. Therefore, those not fans of the slates have flocked toward the ultrabook category.

13-inch ultrabooks might compromise on the portability in terms of the screen size but the overall thin structure and faster processor are great luring features.

On the other hand, netbooks and now 11-inch notebooks are attracting lesser attention. Moreover, the number of such devices is less than satisfactory. One can count them on the fingers of just one hand.

Keeping that in view, Apple and Sony have taken the matter in their hands. Apple released the 11-inch Macbook Air at the WWDC last month. Powered by the latest iterations from Intel and NVIDIA, the new laptop is more powerful than last year’s and is even less expensive at $999. This is a promising step in resuscitating the category.
