US drone strike killed eight in North Waziristan
Friday, August 24th, 2012 12:39:01 by Faisal FarooqPutting aside the protest lodged by Islamabad, the United States carried out fourth drone strike in one week in North Waziristan, killing at least eight people on Friday.
According to the security officials, the unmanned US aircraft fired two missiles on a militant’s hideouts in Dare Nastar area of Tehsil Shawal of Pakistan’s north western tribal region. At least eight persons were reportedly killed in the incident.
Pakistan state television reported that the incident occurred at Tanda Dara, the bordering town that killed 8 people and injured 8 others.
Earlier, at least nine suspected militants were killed when US drones targeted a vehicle in the Sheen Khwar area on the outskirts of Humzonee village, around four kilometres from Miramshah.
The recent attack came just a day after Pakistan foreign office summoned a senior US diplomat to lodge protest over drone strikes the Agency that killed over 15 alleged militants in one week.
The foreign office informed the US diplomat that drone strikes were unlawful, against international law and a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.
Pakistan last month summoned Richard Hoagland, the senior-most US diplomat in the country, in a similar manner to protest against a series of drone attacks. However, it seems to have had no effect.
According to an international advocacy group, the US had launched a total of 336 drone strikes in Pakistan, killing between 2,532 and 3,251 people since 2004.
The London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism noted that 284 of these strikes were ordered by the Obama administration.
The strikes also killed between 475 and 879 civilians. A total of 175 children were also killed. Between 1,204 and 1,332 people were injured.
