Czech star Lukas Rosol downs Alejandro Gonzalez in qualifiers of the US Open – Tennis News
Czech Republic’s, Lukas Rosol, got the better of the Colombian challenger, Alejandro Gonzalez, in straight sets at the qualifying competition of US Open 2012 on Thursday. He nudged up a 7-5, 6-2 success against the 23-year-old to power into the final round
of the qualifiers at this major hard court event held in New York City, United States.
The Czech, who is responsible for the biggest upset at the Wimbledon Championships this season, triumphed over the Colombian in their first encounter. After earning the success, the Czech comfortably inched closer towards the main draw at this last of the
four Grand Slam events.
Seeded fourth in the qualifying competition, Rosol will square off against the 31st seed, Guido Pella from Argentina. The Argentinean tumbled the local wildcard entrant, Tennys Sandgren, in straight sets to set up this battle.
The qualifying third seed, Ricardas Berankis from Lithuania, will join Rosol in the final qualifying round. He bounced back to triumph over the Colombian contestant, Robert Farah, with a 2-6, 7-6(7), 7-5 score line to progress.
Berankis lost his serve twice and eventually gifted away the opening set. However, he rebounded in the following set and smoothly held his entire serves. The Lithuanian failed to get the breakthrough but dominated in the tie-breaker to grab the equaliser
with a 7-6(7) success.
The 22-year-old, who made a final showdown at the Los Angeles ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) event last month, found his rhythm in the final set. He capitalised on one break opportunity in the last game and carved out the decider with a 7-5 win.
The qualifying top seed, Igor Sijsling, displayed brilliant skills to outclass his opponent and book a spot in the main draw.
