Government ready to sacrifice ten prime ministers: Nisar Khuhro

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader and Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro has said that his party would willingly sacrifice ten prime ministers but would not write a letter to Swiss authorities against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had last month issued a contempt notice to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf for not implementing its verdict of writing a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Zardari.

Speaking at Bilawal House in Karachi, the provincial speaker said that the Pakistani judiciary, under the pretense of the doctrine of necessity, had always paved the way for military coups and then later apologized.

He was of the opinion that the apex court has always assisted military men while derailing democracy but it will face stiff resistance at the hands of the ruling PPP if it tries to do so again.

Criticizing the judicial institutions, Nisar Khuhro said that the judiciary should now apologize every month just as it had apologized after former military dictator Ayub Khan’s death.

He observed, “An Indian chief justice had also stated that Pakistan’s judges should refrain from directly interfering in politics. The president has immunity according to the Constitution, and that the courts should rule that no criminal case be tried against Asif Ali Zardari as long as he is the president”.

In his view, it was the judiciary and generals who have destroyed democratic institutions. Quoting examples, he said it was the judiciary which protected General Ziaul Haq against civilian leaders.

He referred the apex court’s verdict in the contempt of court case against Gilani, saying that such decisions are not against the PPP but democracy.

“The judiciary can try to weaken the democratic system but the PPP will stand strong to save the country,” he said.

Replying to a question on the clash between the government and judiciary, he said the former was abiding by the land of the law and respected the court’s rulings.

He stated the Constitution had always been cast aside but this time, the people of the country will defend it.
